On finite semigroups of matrices

Finite semigroups of n by n matrices over the naturals are characterized both by algebraic and combinatorial methods. Next we show that the cardinality of a finite semigroup S of n by n matrices over a field is bounded by a function depending only on n, the number of generators of S and the maximum cardinality of its subgroups. As a consequence, given n and k, there exist, up to isomorphism, only a finite number of finite semigroups of n by n matrices over the rationals, generated by at most k elements. Among other applications to Automaton Theory, we show that it is decidable whether the behavior of a given N – Σ automaton is bounded.     

L'enseignement de la psychologie à l'Université Laurentienne.

Until 1960 the Laurentian University had no Department of Psychology. Six years later 20 different courses are offered within the Department at the undergraduate level to over 300 students. The future of this department seems to be assured if one considers the rapid rate which has marked its initial years of development and the present plans for further expansion. Although the Department of Psychology is presently affiliated with the Department of Sociology it is expected that by 1970 these will be two distinct departments, and that they will occupy a new building specifically designed for the Social Sciences. Comparison of identification criteria for machine inductive inference

A natural ω^pLω+1 hierarchy of successively more general criteria of success for inductive inference machines is described based on the size of sets of anomalies in programs synthesized by such machines. These criteria are compared to others in the literature. Some of our results are interpreted as tradeoff results or as showing the inherent relative-computational complexity of certain processes and others are interpreted from a positivistic, mechanistic philosophical stance as theorems in philosophy of science. The techniques of recursive function theory are employed including ordinary and infinitary recursion theorems.

On the Dry Machining of Steel Surfaces Using Superhard Tools

Coolant for cutting and grinding not only increases the production costs, but also damages the environment and health of the employees. Therefore, attention should be directed towards machining processes, where the use of coolant can be reduced significantly or even stopped. Analysis of the cutting processes and the tool materials throws light on the area where wet, moist, or dry machining are applicable. Dry machining with CBN tools, so called hard turning, performed on hardened steels has produced very favourable results, which are applicable in industry. The characteristics of the surface integrity with dry machining are more favourable than with grinding and the operation costs are reduced. In hard turning, the compressive residual stress field developed, in contrast to the tensile stresses developed in grinding, increases the fatigue life of the machined components.
